What are the best dates for travelling to Aysen, Patagonia?
Our shoulder season are the months of November, December, and March, April, with January and February being our high season. Spring in Patagonia has unpredictable weather but inspiring landscapes of green valleys and snow-capped peaks. The beginning of April brings cold nights, early snow and amazing colors as the season changes. Our overland trips are more flexible with time frames and enjoyable as early as October!
What are the best months for backpacking the circuits?
We recommend December through March, but if you are an avid hiker with excellent cold-weather backpacking gear, we can push the shoulder season. Preparedness makes the trip and that includes the warm clothes and gear brought from home. We are happy to provide suggested packing lists upon booking!
What airport do I fly in to and how do I get to Villa Cerro Castillo?
You will want to fly in to Balmaceda Airport, (BBA abbreviated.)This airport is strategically located 45 minutes southeast of Coyhaique and an hour northeast of Villa Cerro Castillo on paved roads. Our packaged tours include airport transfers.
Can I use credit cards?
Yes! Most restaurants and hotels take credit cards. We do recommend having some cash available for souvenirs and local artisans who do not take credit cards. ATMs are located in Coyhaique, Villa Cerro Castillo, Puerto Rio Tranquilo, Chile Chico, and Cochrane, and a few other places along the Carretera Austral.
Is Chile safe?
Yes, Chile is one of the safest countries in South America. Please keep in mind as a traveler, one is always targeted no matter what country. In the capital city of Santiago, especially among touristy areas and the airport, we do recommend higher precautions as pickpocketing, cell phone and jewelry theft is high. We also recommend only taking official taxi services from the customer desk at baggage claim in the Santiago airport. Aysen, Patagonia is much different and theft is very low. If you have more questions, feel free to ask our staff.
Do you have a packing list?
Yes, upon booking, we send a suggested packing list and information for all our trips.
Do I need insurance?
We highly recommend purchasing a travel insurance policy prior to your trip, as well as health insurance while overseas. If you are unsure of what to purchase, we can assist in this process or recommend possible agents. Adventure travel and tours in Patagonia contain an inherent risk. We ask that you accept this responsibility and trust our judgement when pertaining to your tour.
What level of horseback riding is needed for the equestrian packages?
All of our equestrian expeditions require prior riding experience. Our 6-day horseback riding, Avellano Valley to Puerto Cristal, requires advanced riding skills, due to the amount of time in the saddle and the mountainous terrain we cover. Our shorter trips are recommended for guests with medium level experience, and we do have shorter 3-4 hours rides around Villa Cerro Castillo for beginners.
